Subtext and Inner Monologue

Inner monologue refers to what the character is thinking and feeling. Inner and dramatic tension can be propelled by the inner monologue. A character may be doing and saying one thing but thinking and feeling another.

An actor will find great life in her charcteristations when she runs her character's inner monologue and not her own. Working to think and feel the character's inner world makes for detailed and believable perfomances.

Actor's exploring their character's inner monologues will add strength and support the subtext of the scene or story being told. The subtext refers to the agenda or unspoken reason for a situation taking palce. It also involves the needs of a character that goes unrevealed.

Once the inner monologue is revealed it becomes the outer monologue or the expressed intentions of a character or a scene.
