Singing in the Rain - First Page

BUS STOP - LATE AFTERNOON
It's pouring with rain. SARAH, hair wet, bag over her shoulder, loaded down with several shopping bags, races to the bus shelter with an umbrella over her head. When she reaches the shelter of the bench, she juggles her bags and bends to put them down on the bench.

She then shakes her umbrella wildly - expanding and contracting it quickly - to get the rain off it. As she expands it to full width, therefore blocking her view of anything but the inside of the umbrella for a few seconds, she doesn't see JUSTIN running towards the bus shelter. As SARAH snaps her umbrella shut for the final time, it becomes a weapon and she nearly spears him as he arrives at that precise moment.

He deftly sidesteps mortal danger. JUSTIN has no umbrella, and is wearing light clothes. He's freezing cold from the rain - and pretty much soaked.

SARAH: Shit - sorry - sorreee ...

JUSTIN: (shivering and dripping) That's ok.

They look at each other:

SARAH: Justin?
JUSTIN: Sarah?

BOTH: Yes!

Beat. A sense that they know each other but not well.

BOTH: How are you?

Both laugh.

BOTH: Good. And you? Good.

They laugh again, a bit embarrassed.

SARAH: How's Karen?
JUSTIN: How's Kevin?

Beat.

BOTH: Well ... this is - sorry ... I -

They laugh.

JUSTIN: Ladies first -

SARAH: What was the question?

JUSTIN: Ah ... I think we were asking about our respective spouses.

SARAH: Oh right ... So how is Karen?

JUSTIN: Busy as ever. She's got an exhibition about to open soon at that new Gallery in the city.

SARAH: That's great. She deserves it. I remember her paintings are awesome.

JUSTIN: (honestly) Yes, they are.

SARAH: You must be proud of her. Tell her I said "congratulations".

JUSTIN: I will do that. When I see her.
