Notes on Singing in the Rain

Singing in the Rain is a delightful comic piece, providing actor's with a vehicle to explore not only their comic abilities but also their abilities to handle surprise and delight.

Set in a bus stop, this scene asks actors to consider the effect of a public space on a private communication. Will the actors discover that at first, the public space affects the way Justin and Sarah communicate? Or is this soon forgotten the more they get 'into' each other? And will the interruption of the arrival of the bus be made more prominent the more the characters Justin and Sarah absorb themselves in each other?

Justin and Sarah are two characters that very simply and very perfectly just 'get each other'. They connect. They have fun. Fate has brought them together on this occasion but fate has also kept them apart and for reasons not explained in the scene they have both ended up with different partners. Where the future takes them is anyone's guess, for now, in this brief window of time they are in a world of their own. And digging it!

The emotional obligations for both actors are in the same area of excitement, enjoyment, titillation and flirtation. There is clearly inner tension for both characters as they are testing the line of where their friendship starts and finishes. They both hint at not being satisfied in their present relationships but this must all be carried by the actor as an inner monologue and inner tension which adds to the delight of the scene - all that which is NOT being said.

The actors exploring this scene need to find the place with each other where they can have fun: explore the playful nature of their relationship and the attraction.

The songs included in the scene also give the actors an opportunity to express feelings of joy and delight and in Justin's case - thoughtfulness.
