Move to the City - First Page

RAELEEN'S HOUSE - EVENING
RAELEEN is dressed in a housecoat which has seen better days. Her house and furniture has the look of "hand me downs" / "2nd hand store" feel to it. On the otherwise unadorned sideboard are photos of RAELEEN and her 3 children at various ages. There is also a photo of the children with someone obviously cut out. The TV or radio is blaring, a smalltown radio station. RAELEEN is preparing a sandwich for herself.

JOCELYN arrives at the door and doesn't even knock as she enters. She's obviously very familiar with this house. And she has something weighing on her mind.

JOCELYN: (Announcing her arrival) Hello!

RAELEEN: In the kitchen, Joss.

JOCELYN goes over to RAELEEN with piles of takeaway food she's brought, and holds the bags of food up temptingly.

JOCELYN: Thought we might dine in style tonight.

RAELEEN: You can't keep buyin' our dinner!

JOCELYN: (laughs) Greasy Joe's Friday Night Special. (foreign accent imitating Greasy Joe). "Hey, Josssalin ... you take as much aza you-a-want. H'ok? You tell-a Rae-LEEEEN Joe says ello". So here we have it ... pure cholesterol ... none of that annoying goodness to get in the way.

RAELEEN: (looks at the containers) This isn't from Greasy Joe's. This is from that fancy new place uptown. What's the special occasion?

JOCELYN brushes the comment away.

JOCELYN: Well, are you hungry or what?

RAELEEN: 'Course I am.

JOCELYN: Good. Then let's eat. I'll go get the kids ...

RAELEEN: They're not here.

JOCELYN is both disappointed and relieved.

RAELEEN: They're at my olds. Went there after school.

JOCELYN: The 3 of them? (Attempt at joke) So your mother will be into the valium or the vodka or both about (looks at watch) ... now.

RAELEEN laughs with her.

RAELEEN: I have to pick 'em up at 9.30.

Beat. Then:

RAELEEN: I just ...
RAE / JOC: (an old story) ... needed a break.

JOCELYN: I know. (Beat) Well, then, let's start eating.

They grab utensils and sit down during the following.

RAELEEN: Awwright!

JOCELYN: And, what we don't eat, they can have tomorrow night.

RAELEEN: Thanks. (seriously) Dunno what I'd do if you weren't around.

JOCELYN doesn't answer. They start eating.

RAELEEN: It's true.

JOCELYN: It's just takeaway, Raels.

RAELEEN: No it's more than that. I had another shit of a day at work today, and I was thinkin' that when you used to work there too, I'd tell you about it, and I'd feel better. And you know ... you showed me the ropes when I started. You looked after me and the kids when Billy pissed off. You (embarrassed) buy things for the kids that I can't afford.

JOCELYN: Well, you have to listen to all my boyfriend dramas.

They laugh.

RAELEEN: True.
