Morally Bankrupt - First Page

STUART and PENNY'S FAMILY HOME - AFTERNOON
There are family photographs on a sideboard. The place has a feel of a family home, not a young person's apartment'.

PENNY is preparing to go somewhere. She is looking fairly drab - hair hanging maybe not washed for a few days, track suit or similar. Just as she picks up her keys, there's an angry pounding at the door.

STUART: (O/S) Penny, open this fucking door right now.

PENNY: Hold on.

PENNY goes to the door.

PENNY: What the hell is - (wrong with you?)

But before she can get the sentence out, STUART has barged into the apartment. He turns to face her.

STUART: I got a call from the nursing home this morning.

PENNY: (1/2 beat) Is Mum alright? I only saw her last night -

STUART: No lies, please.

PENNY shuts up.

STUART: There's not enough money in her account to pay the fees for this month.

PENNY: Of course there is -

STUART: Don't start with me, Penny. Someone has taken $100,000 out of mum's account.

PENNY stands there, silently.

STUART: And it sure as hell wasn't me.

PENNY turns away. STUART grabs her and turns her back to face him, with both hands now on her shoulders.

STUART: It was you, wasn't it?

PENNY: I just borrowed it -

STUART is completely flabbergasted.

STUART: You stole Mum's life savings? After everything - everything - mum and dad have done for you.

PENNY: I'm going to pay it back.
