Situation Reveals Character

We all play different roles depending on where we are and who we are with. Often our characters find themselves in 'high stakes' situations. Sometimes there is a crisis or an emotionaly impacting event. When playing a scene we will always look for the most impacting or interesting choice that we can play. Such that it is consistant with the scene and the character. If a character is in a stressful or impacting situation how the character responds will reveal something about them.

For exampe: a hero character in a scene from the film Braveheart will rise up and fight the English oppressors who have occupied his land and killed his wife. Another character in another story might behave very diffently. Golum, for example, in Lord of The Rings does not behave heroicaly but demonstrates incredible tenacity and perseverance.

How our character reacts to a situation tells us a lot about their makeup. Sometimes the writer will intend the response and other times the actor might make unusual choices that reveal something about the character that wasn't evident from the initial reading.Discovering how our characters react to different situations is a big part of the exploration process of dramatic material.

In the scene BRAD and JANET - Brad's behaviour is totally out of character for those that know him. He has been diagnosed with cancer and is not handling it at all. This situation reveals a part of his character that his family and his partner Janet have never experienced before. The source of conflict in the scene is completely due to his reaction. In turn his brother Michael rises to the occasion to help his younger brother through a trying time. Both Michael and Brad have been revealed to us through the situation in which they find themsleves.
