CASTING OFFICE WAITING ROOM - DAY There is a couch against a wall, and a couple of chairs scattered around. On the wall is a sign: "A WORLD BEYOND TOMORROW" CASTING SESSION IN PROCESS. PLEASE MOTIVATE SILENTLY. There is a coffee table with some forms attached to a folder, with a sign: PLEASE FILL IN A FORM WHILE YOU WAIT. COURTNEY is already filling in a form, chanting "white light and confidence" to herself very quietly. JACKIE arrives, unseen by COURTNEY. She looks around the room to see who else is there. She adopts her friendliest smile and most ingratiating manner. JACKIE: (to Courtney) Hi. COURTNEY looks up briefly. COURTNEY: Hello. JACKIE: Um ... I was just wondering ... are they running on time? COURTNEY: I don't know. I just got here myself. JACKIE: It's just that I have four auditions today, and I don't want to be late for the next one. It's for Mel Rosenberg's new film. Are you going for that too? COURTNEY: No, the role was too small for where I'm at right now. JACKIE: Oh ... The Nurse? Right ... Don't blame you. COURTNEY: Yeah, luckily I don't have to go for those Bit Parts any more. JACKIE: Luckily, neither do I. I'm going for the lead. COURTNEY makes a mental note of that, and goes back to filling in the form. COURTNEY: (not looking at Jackie) You have to fill in a form. JACKIE: God, I go to so many auditions, I can probably do it with my eyes closed. COURTNEY: What a pity. JACKIE: Sorry? COURTNEY: That you have to go to so many auditions ... (looks up, smiles) cos you know, the way to stop going to auditions is ... BOTH: To start getting the jobs. They laugh. It's all facade. END OF FIRST PAGE |
